British-Iranian artist Shiva Feshareki announces her new single Vapour for London-based independent label SA Recordings.
Vapour is the first new release following her debut album format release NEW FORMS in February. It’s a continuation of her experiments into re-imagining the turntable, which has seen Shiva honoured as one of the most innovative composers of her generation. Shiva studied composition under Mark-Anthony Turnage at the Royal College of Music and her output over the past decade has included compositions for orchestras, string quartets and vocal music. Vapour is part of her on-going engagement with cutting-edge electronic music culture – including the cut and paste sampling of drum’n’bass and jungle and other de-constructions coming out of London and Berlin’s music culture. Her immersive composition ‘Opus Infinity’ for Turntables and mixed ensemble will be premiered by Shiva and the iconic avant-garde group Ensemble Modern in Germany next year.
Shiva's music is the outcome of a unique system of thought, which treats acoustic space and time as her sculptor’s material to be shaped, creating an intense tactile feel to works coaxed from her turntable technique. The sampling and replaying of her previous work using dub plates adds another meta-layer of meaning, the compositions in a perpetual state of re-manipulation.
“The piece is called Vapour because the whole thing is processed through my analogue space echo and sounds like thick, electronically produced vapour” says Shiva. “I made Vapour through my live turntabling using the vinyl disc of my last release NEW FORMS. Before that, NEW FORMS was my orchestral piece GABA-analogue, which is also my other orchestral piece O. Part of it was also originally my radio jingle for my NTS Show, which was originally just me saying ‘this is Shiva Feshareki’ live on air. We are now talking about material recorded years ago. After Vapour, it will morph or ‘condense’ into something else entirely, constantly recycling itself and evolving through time.”
